DR. Sinnickson
Dr. Dylan Sinnickson is the owner and lead scientist at Florida Data Science Academy. He is formally trained in both statistical computing and quantitative ecology. With respect to his published research, Dr. Sinnickson primarily employs ecological models to study estuarine fish populations. Techniques with which he has particular expertise include time series analysis, machine learning, and big data analytics. Dr. Sinnickson has studied at renowned academic institutions throughout the United States including Middlebury College (Bachelor's - Conservation Biology), the University of Miami (Master's - Fisheries Management), and the University of Florida (PhD - Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences).
History of Florida Data Science Academy
Florida Data Science Academy was founded by lead scientist, Dr. Dylan Sinnickson, to provide a comprehensive, educational platform for analytical research. Dr. Sinnickson received his PhD from the University of Florida, where his research focused on assessing the effect of riverine discharge on estuarine fish populations and food webs in the Suwannee River Estuary. Throughout his academic career, Dr. Sinnickson has recognized the strong demand for quantitive expertise which has been transforming private industries. This revolution is exemplified by the growing role that data scientists play in industries such as information technologies (e.g. Google, Facebook, Amazon), professional sports (e.g. Moneyball and athletic analytics), and firms developing machine learning and AI capabilties. The necessity of statistical computing has also been highlighed by Harvard Business Review, distinguishing the occupation of "Data Scientist" as the "Job of the 21st Century." Data currently drives our economies and is essential for any successful business to make informative decisions. To meet these growing demands, Dr. Sinnickson transitioned his formal academic training in data science and quantitative ecology to industry through corporate consulting, private research, and teaching classes in data analytics.
Florida Data Science Academy is stationed in Miami, Florida, but operates primarily online. The Academy currently offers it flagship course, 'Intro to Data Science,' which covers both basic analytical skills and advanced machine learning methodologies. In addition to 'Intro to Data Science,' students can also access FDSA content on YouTube, which are generally short videos covering specific computational problems. All courses are taught in the R programming language. Lastly, FDSA is developing an 'Ecopath Modeling' course, which will be a 3-5 day bootcamp tutorial in ecological modeling using the Ecopath with Ecosim modeling software.
